Abuja - The Nigerian Court of Appeal in Abuja has ended the controversy surrounding public procession (protests/demonstrations) over whether or not there is a need for police permit before such processions can be undertaken by citizens of Nigeria. According to the ruling delivered by the the Appellate Court, presided over by Justice Danladi Mohammad, it is no longer necessary to obtain permit before embarking on any assembly as such police approval infringed on the fundamental human rights of Nigerians provided for in the 1999 Constitution of the Federal republic of Nigeria.

Abuja - One does not need to be a soothsayer or a prophet to know that it is only a matter of time before current President Musa Yar’Adua and immediate past Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, will end up having a “family meeting” to end the dispute currently in front of the federal election tribunal.
As if the timing could have been better, the Punch Newspaper reported that the two players in the April 2007 presidential election, met behind closed doors at the Presidential Villa, Abuja last week. The two found it suitable to meet at a time when the Wilbros bribery scandal information involving the former Vice President was leaked to the public.

Respite for undocumented immigrants - US Govt to suspend immigration rule

NY Times - Thousands of undocumented immigrants will breathe a much needed sigh of relief as the US Government has suspended its legal defense of a new rule that would have forced employers to fire workers if their [employee] social security information could not be verified within 90 days.
According to the report from the New York Times, the Bush administration will instead revise the rule and re-submit its legal defense papers to the high courts by March of 2008. This is against the backdrop of concerms raised by a Federal Judge sitting on the case.

Only in Nigeria - Serving State Commisioner beaten and detained by the Police

Nigerian Tribune (Ibadan) - A serving state commisioner for environment and water resources under the administration of current Oyo State Government, Alhaji Majekodunmi Aborode, got the jungle style of justice which is now synonymous with the Nigeria Police force, on Saturday while according to him, he was performing his legal duties. This for sure can only happen in Nigeria!
Although, the Police force has a different version of the what really took place, the commissioner was said to have been beaten by an Inspector of Police for “obstructing justice” being performed on his [commisioner’s orderly]. As if the street justice was not enough, the commisioner and his orderly were also detained by the branch police DPO for about 5 hours.

Attorney General asks Yar’Adua to stop Ibori’s trial in UK

What exactly is the mission of the current Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Chief Mike Aondoaka (SAN)? This a million-naira question that needs immediate answer. This learned “gentleman” has literally attempted to stop everything anti-corruption in Nigeria. First, he waged war on the EFCC and the ICPC, now, he is asking President Yar’Adua to intervene and stop the trial of former governor of Delta State, Chief James Ibori, in a London court.
