London-bound Nigerian passengers grounded because of heavy snow

SCORES of Nigerian travellers, particularly to London, were yesterday stranded at the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Lagos as a result of bad weather, occasioned by snow that led to the partial closure of the Heathrow Airport.Already from Heathrow, more than 750 flights have been cancelled, leaving passengers stranded.

At the Lagos airport, passengers on British Airways could not check in for their trip to London, as the airline said that yesterday’s flight out of Lagos to London would now be done today.

Many of them who had come to the airport for the mandatory check-in left disappointed. Many others who are transiting to the United States through Heathrow Airport equally went home disappointed.

UK issued 10,000 plus student visas to Nigerians in 2008

Lagos - A total of 10,090, out of the 28,500 Nigerian students, who applied for visas to study in the United Kingdom were successful last year, with a refusal rate of 65 percent, representing 35 per cent of those who sought to study in the UK.First Secretary and Head of Visa Section of the British High Commission, Mr. Jason Ivory, who disclosed this at the presentation of this year’s British Council’s Education UK Exhibition in Lagos yesterday, said this was an improvement on 8, 700 and 7, 500 visas issued in 2007 and 2006 respectively.

Nigerians battle over e-passport as deadline 2010 looms

Lagos -Lagos - Thousands of Nigerians living abroad yesterday besieged the Ikoyi Passport Office of the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) in Lagos in quest of e-passports.

A check by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) showed that majority of them, including children, were resident in the United States,United Kingdom and Germany.

Mr Uche Nwankolo, a UK resident said that owning a Nigerian passport was not only patriotic but also it gave him a sense of belonging.

Lagos - Arik Air began its maiden flight to London from the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Lagos, yesterday in its new Airbus A340-500 aircraft, with a promise to compete favorably with existing carriers on the Lagos-London Heathrow route.

At present, British Airways, Virgin Atlantic Airways, Virgin Nigeria Airways and Bellview Airlines are the carriers currently operating direct flight service on the route.

The flight, after the necessary airport formalities, took off exactly 12:37pm, after taxing away for take off at noon and was expected to land at Heathrow Terminal 2 at 5:30pm.

Pastoe E.A. AdeboyeLagos -General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastor Enoch Adejare Adeboye has given details of a humiliating experience he was once subjected to at an international airport while visiting a foreign country.

The respected cleric narrated how he was given a thorough search at the airport as soon as he tendered his Nigerian passport, saying the immigration officials became more suspicious of him when he claimed to be a pastor from Nigeria.

Pastor Adeboye, who spoke with a team from Zero Corruption, a magazine published by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), lamented that corruption has virtually destroyed the image of Nigerians outside the country, regretting that most foreigners now regard all Nigerians as fraudsters.
