Nigeria close to offering full Broadband Internet Services

Lagos - The Nigerian Communications Commission has said that broadband services are at the doorsteps of the country as some operators have begun offering such services on wireless platforms ahead of the State Accelerated Broadband Initiative.

SABI is a scheme designed by NCC to take broadband infrastructure to all the 36 state capitals of the country as well as urban and semi-urban centers.

Nigeria eliminates fees to block stolen mobile phones

Abuja - The Executive Vice Chairman/Chief Executive, Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Mr. Ernest Ndukwe, has disclosed that Nigerian mobile phone subscribers will enjoy free, rather than paid, blocking of stolen phones when an anti-theft scheme to be activated by all operators goes live before year end.

The regulatory road map also envisions that by year end, operators will have a database of the identity of pre-paid phone subscribers to assist law enforcement agencies in stemming the growing incidence of crimes linked with mobile and allied telephony services.

Nigeria move to stop mobile phone theft

Abuja - The menace of mobile handset thefts in Nigeria will soon be over as the Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC,  announced that the handset anti-theft system that would render any stolen mobile phone handset in the country useless, will come into operation before December 2008.

This will completely bar any of such phones from being used in any of the phone networks. The Executive Vice Chairman and Chief Executive of NCC, Engr. Ernest Ndukwe, who gave the news at the 47th Consumer Parliament held at Awka, Anambra State, also said the regulatory body had concluded plans to force down the current tariffs being charged by phone operators for Short Messaging Services (SMS), in the country so as to assist more people to communicate more easily and more cheaply.

Nigeria is world’s 94th information technology compliant country

Geneva (Switzerland) - Nigeria has been ranked 94th on the list of the world’s information technology-compliant countries, according to The Global Information Technology Report 2007-2008 released by the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Geneva, Switzerland. Nigeria scored 3.32 points to secure the ranking out of a total of 127 countries polled.

Denmark retained it’s 2006/2007 first position as the world’s most networked economy having secured a total of 5.78 points. Sweden and Switzerland won the second and third places respectively. Sweden also retained its 2006-2007 position.
