UK toys with Sharia Law

London - The Lord Chief Justice of England and Wales, Lord Phillips, has said that the United Kingdom may introduce the principles of Sharia law into some aspects of its legal system.

The British Broadcasting Corporation Online reports that Lord Phillips, the most senior judge in England and Wales, said there was no reason Sharia law principles could not be used in mediation. However, he said this would still be subject to the “jurisdiction of the English and Welsh courts.”

Nigeria move to stop mobile phone theft

Abuja - The menace of mobile handset thefts in Nigeria will soon be over as the Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC,  announced that the handset anti-theft system that would render any stolen mobile phone handset in the country useless, will come into operation before December 2008.

This will completely bar any of such phones from being used in any of the phone networks. The Executive Vice Chairman and Chief Executive of NCC, Engr. Ernest Ndukwe, who gave the news at the 47th Consumer Parliament held at Awka, Anambra State, also said the regulatory body had concluded plans to force down the current tariffs being charged by phone operators for Short Messaging Services (SMS), in the country so as to assist more people to communicate more easily and more cheaply.

Post adedibu era - Robbers snatch Oyo commisioner’s car in Ibadan

Ibadan - As predicted by many, Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State has began to witness the first wave of crime after the passing away of Chief Lamidi Adedibu, the man who literarily controls the security and violence in the Stae capital. Robbers went on rampage in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, on Monday night, snatching the official vehicle of the state Commissioner for Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Mrs. Deborah Oyelade.

The incident, which happened around 8.00pm, according to a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer in charge of the state command, Miss Olabisi Okuwobi, on Tuesday, was carried out by five armed men.

EFCC charges Kenny Martins, two accomplices, to court over stealing

Abuja - The National Coordinator of the Police Equipment Foundation (PEF), Chief Kenny Martins, his deputy, Ibrahim Dumuje and one Yero Gella were on Monday arraigned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for alleged conversion of the monies donated to the foundation for personal use.

They were also charged with felony, criminal breach of trust, theft and criminal conversion and misuse of the fund donated to the PEF.

The accused pleaded not guilty to the three-count charge read to them by the court registrar.

But their oral applications for bail were rejected by the trial judge, Justice Abubakar Talba.

UK Court find two men guilty of killing Nigerian boy

Late Michael DosunmuLondon - Two men, Mohammed Sannoh and Abdi Omar Noor, have been found guilty of murdering a 15-year-old Nigerian boy, Michael Dosunmu, who was shot dead as he slept at his home in south-east London.

The Nigerian teenager was shot four times when gunmen burst into the family home in Peckham in February 2007.

The Old Bailey heard that Dosunmu was mistaken for his older brother who was to be killed in revenge for a murder.

Sannoh, 19, a Somali, from Peckham, and Noor, 22, originally from Sierra-Leone, lives in Camberwell, south-east London, had denied murder.
