Leaders of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) went underground to effectively coordinate the nationwide strike which commenced yesterday to avoid possible arrest by agents of the State Security Service (SSS) but they have commended members of the union and directed them to sustain the strike which paralyzed teaching activities in primary and secondary schools nationwide.
Reports from Kebbi, Plateau, Ogun, Lagos, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom, Osun, Benue, Anambra states indicate total compliance with the strike as students who reported for school were sent back home in compliance with the directive from the national headquarters of the NUT in Abuja.

Nigeria - Nigeria’s primary and secondary school teachers under the aegis of the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT) has commenced a nationwide strike action intended to force the Federal Government to issue approval circular on the new Teacher’s Salary Structure (TSS).
The declaration of strike by teachers came in the wake of Federal Government’s decision to set up a salary review commission to look into all demands for wage increase within the public service.

Abuja - The World Bank has approved a credit grant totaling $390 million (about N45 billion) to assist in the development of Nigeria’s road transport sector.
World Bank’s financial support came in the wake of President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua’s approval for the take-off of the Infrastructure Concession Regulatory Commission (ICRC) next month.
The Country Director of World Bank in Nigeria, Mr. Onno Ruhi, at a stakeholders’ workshop on the road sector reform held in Abuja, said the bank’s offer is a demonstration of its commitment towards the development of the country’s transport sector. “I am happy to announce that as a demonstration of our continued commitment towards Nigeria’s transport sector this quarter, the bank approved a credit totalling $390m (equivalent to over N45bn),” he said.

Abuja - Nigeria President, Umaru Yar’Adua has finally opened up on the state of his health as he admitted having a kidney problem. The President made this known during a live telecast of a special presidential media chat organized to mark Democracy Day and one year in office.
He also stated that Nigerians had been exaggerating his health condition and that it had been politicized. Yar’Adua said his last trip to Germany was to treat a reaction he had to malaria drugs administered to him by his doctors in Nigeria, adding that the effects of the drugs were so severe that they made his face to swell up.

London - The British government has recovered £40 million (N9.3bn) suspected to have been stolen by some corrupt Nigerian government officials, and has commence judicial procedure to transfer the recovered loot to Nigeria.
The money was recovered through the UK judicial system in the fight against money laundering, according to the Lord Major of London, David Lewis.
Mr Lewis told journalists in Abuja after visiting some ministries that the £40 million was different from the £150,000 confiscated from former governor of Plateau State, Chief Joshua Dariye, and just handed over to the Federal Government.
