Lagos - Veteran highlife musician, Sunday Akanite, popularly known as Oliver De Coque has died at a Lagos Hospital over the weekend. Although cause of his sudden death was not disclosed, but sources close to the family of the highlife musician said he had not been feeling well for some time now.
According to his son, his father was hale and hearty. “My father was not sick, he said he was going to rest and that was all. I still cannot believe that he is dead.”
THE death two days ago of Chief Lamidi Ariyibi Adedibu, the self-styled controller of Ibadan politics and “father of the PDP”, has been received with muted feelings of relief across the land. The sub-text is the hope that there can now be some peace in Oyo state politics. Adedibu intervened in Oyo state and Nigerian politics in the last few years in a rather spectacular manner, wielding power, illegally and recklessly, with the ardour of a warlord. But no one should be tempted to think that this man’s departure will mark the end of the politics of thuggery, rigging and violence.
Abuja - Former chairman of the defunct National Electoral Commission (NEC) and organizer of the famous June 12 presidential election, Professor Humphrey Nwosu, has said Nigerians should blame the late Gen. Sani Abacha and one-time Attorney-General of the Federation, Chief Clement Akpamgbo, for the nullification of the June 12, 1993 election won by the late Chief M.K.O. Abiola.
Prof. Nwosu at the launch in Abuja yesterday of a book chronicling preparations and events that followed the election exonerated the then military President Ibrahim Babangida from the events that led to the annulment, saying Babangida gave him the strongest support for to the elections.
