Profile of the first Nigerian-born Mayor of Barking and Dagenham, England

Mayor Emmanuel Obasohan of Barking and Dagenham BoroughLondon - The Worshipful The Mayor, Councilor Emmanuel Obasohan, the newly elected Mayor London Borough of Barking and Dagenham, was born in Benin city capital of Edo state in Nigeria in a predominant egalitarian society. He is married to Mercy Obasohan, his wife of 25 years and have 4 children, 3 boys and a girl.

According to the Mayor in his own word, “As I grew I became very active in establishing community development projects in the area, this quest to help my community in a more positive manner. I entered into active politics to help build the Nigerian republican convention, a defunct political party in Nigeria”.

The Mayor immigrated to the United Kingdom in 1990 and continued his community based service. He later joined the Labor Party movement in Hackney where he was a resident and actively participated as the party won several by-elections.

On moving to Barking and Dagenham over 7 years ago, he continued to participate actively in community service, and was nominated as parent governor of Dagenham Park School and later local authority governor of the same school and Becontree Primary School - a post he still holds.

He also served as River Ward mini secretary of the Labor Party and am the ethnic minority representative of Dagenham and Rainham Constituency Labor Party.

His election as Councilor came in May 2006 as he continued to work relentlessly for the good of my community. Outside the new Mayor’s political activities, He is a devoted Christian and Pastor at the Church of God Mission International, whose church has been greatly involved with his community based projects and activities for the youth and elderly.
