Abuja - The National Universities Commission (NUC) has announced the blacklisting of five additional “fake” universities bringing to a total of 15 of such this year alone, so far closed and operating illegally, in the Nigeria.

The blacklisted schools are Blacksmith University, Awka, St Paul University College, Awka, both in Anambra State; and, Rev. D.O. Ockiya College of Theology and Management Sciences, Ogbia, Bayelsa State.

Others are University of Applied Science and Management, Port Novo, Republic of Benin; University of Industry, Yaba, Lagos.

According to a release in Abuja, the Executive Secretary, NUC, Prof Julius Okojie, warned parents and students against patronizing such schools.

He further warned that certificates from such institutions would not be recognized by the government, employers of labor, educational institutions and the National Youth Service Corps.

“The National Universities Commission wishes to announce to the general public, especially parents and prospective undergraduates, that the under-listed ‘universities’ have not been licensed by the Federal Government.

“They are, therefore, operating illegally in violation of Education Act CAP E3 Law of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.

“For the avoidance of doubt, anybody who patronizes or obtains any certificate from any of these illegal institutions, does so at his own risk.

“Certificates obtained from these sources will not be recognized for the purposes of NYSC, employment, and further studies. The relevant law enforcement agencies have also been informed for their further necessary action.”

The full list of the illegal universities so far closed down by the NUC include Christians of Charity American University of Science and Technology, Okija, Anambra State, and Atlantic Intercontinental University, Maitama, Abuja.

Others are Metro University, Dutse/Bwari, Abuja, Southend University, Ngwuro Egeru, Ndoki, River State, Houdegbe North American University, Benin Republic, and North Central University, Otukpo, Benue state.

Also on the list are National University of Nigeria, Keffi, Nasarawa State, Leadway University, Ughelli, Delta State, Saint Clement University, Iyin Ekiti, Ekiti State, and Christ Alive Christian Seminary and University, Enugu.
