Cocaine in Garri - NDLEA arrests suspects
Lagos - The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport (MMIA) Lagos, arrested four drug couriers within twelve hours, two of the suspects were reported to have ingested the drug, the third hid hers at the bottom of her bag, and the fourth concealed her 1,849kg of cocaine in a black polythene inside the garri in her luggage.
One of the suspects was arrested in the afternoon, while the other three were nabbed at night. NDLEA Airport Commander, Mr. Victor Coleshawers described the arrests as “an exciting experience.” He vowed to arrest more drug couriers, warning them to stop using the airport. According to him, “there is nothing we do not check, not even garri, because drug dealers can hide drugs anywhere”.
The suspects are Ajayi Felicia (35), Akinleye Tawakalitu (50), Esione Nnamdi Blessed (26) and Alozie Chijindu Bright (25) . Felicia, a trader based in Ijebu-Ife, Ogun State, was arrested on her way to Bombay with 1.849kg of cocaine wrapped in black polythene concealed inside garri in her luggage.
A 50 year-old mother of three, Tawakalitu was arrested at the central screening point of the airport with 1.980 kg of cocaine concealed at the bottom of her bag containing her personal effects. She accepted ownership of the drug stating that her Malian friend sent it to her to take to Milan for a fee of $6,000. The suspect blamed her involvement in drugs on poverty. “I am a widow with three children. My friend in Mali promised to help me if only I can take the drug to Milan. A lady called me on phone and gave me the bag containing the drug in Ibadan,” she lamented.
Similarly, Nnamdi Blessed was arrested after he tested positive for drug ingestion during screening of passengers on a KLM flight. The 26 year-old motor spare parts dealer from Nnewi was arrested on his way to Hamburg, Germany. Esione confessed to have ingested 63 wraps of cocaine for 5,300 euros.
The fourth suspect, Bright, also tested positive for drug ingestion during screening of passengers on same KLM flight. He was to travel to Madrid with 66 wraps of cocaine for $3,000. He works in a factory in Valencia Spain and hails from Amatu in Obimangwa Local Government Area of Abia State.
The two male suspects that ingested the drugs have been placed under observation until they discharge the drugs from their system.
