Ghana - The Nigeria Football Association (NFA) on Tuesday has purportedly faxed a notice of dismissal on coach Berti Vogts after being forced to backpedal on announcing his immediate dismissal, according to news sources from KickOffNigeria.com.
NFA officials kept journalists waiting for over four hours for a press conference at the Alisa Hotel where Berti’s dismissal was expected to be announced, only for a board member, Mohammed Ladan to read out a brief statement dissociating the FA from reports that Vogts had been sacked.
A reliable KickOffNigeria.com source found out exclusively from top NFA officials that the major reason for the action was because just before the announcement was to be made, NFA lawyers pointed out, among other things, a clause in the contract which stipulates that there must be a 30-day notice in the event of dismissal.
The notice, along with other documentation, was faxed to Vogts and his lawyers on Tuesday.
This means that the NFA cannot officially announce the decision for the next one month.
In addition, top officials of the sports ministry had instructed the FA to delay the announcement in order to afford them time to brief Globacom chairman Mike Adenuga, whose company picks up the tab for the coach’s wages and who will be responsible for whatever compensation will need to be paid.
With Vogts dismissal, Austin Eguavoen returns to take charge, for the next 30 days at least. He will be assisted by Ike Shorunmu and Samson Siasia, although the latter has been asked to focus more on his Olympic job for the time being.
It will be recalled that the Super “Chicken”Eagles failed to qualify past the quarter finals for the first time in the history of the African Cup of Nations, presently taking place in Ghana. The Eagles were defeated 1-2 by 10-men Black Stars of Ghana.
