Abuja - The British High Commission on Wednesday said the lack of standards in administrative procedures by most universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education was responsible for its denial of many students the visas to study in UK. The commission gave the number of student applications for visas in Abuja as almost 60,000 in 2007, while Lagos was said to have a higher number in the same year.
The Verification Officer of the British High Commission, Mrs. Esther Samuel, and the Entry Clearance Forgery Officer, Mr. Coran Oakley, both confirmed that the situation had become a ‘nightmare’ to the commission.

Abuja - With the South Africa 2010 World Cup qualifiers just weeks away, the Nigeria Football Association (NFA) yesterday failed to appoint a substantive coach for the Super Eagles despite interviewing some candidates such as Stephen Keshi, Sunday Oliseh, and Samson Siasia, for the job but rather, the association named former coach of Abiola Babes and BCC Lions of Gboko, James Peters, the Super Eagles interim coach for one month.
Many Nigerians have expressed surprise and disgust at Peters’ choice in whatever capacity. They believe the NFA has a hidden agenda by refusing to name one of the interviewed candidates.

Abuja - In a nationally televised ruling, the presidential election tribunal sitting in Abuja has dismissed the opposition petitions asking that President Umaru Yar’Adua’s and Jonathan Goodluck’s election last year April, be annulled.
But Judge Abdulkadir Abubakar Jega said both former presidential candidates of the AD and ANPP, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar and Gen Muhammodu Buhari respectively, had failed to prove that violations of the electoral law were substantial enough to invalidate the election result.
The opposition candidates have immediately signified their intention of appealing at the Supreme Court, where the final decision is likely to be decided.
Security has been tight in the capital, Abuja, in the run-up to the ruling.
