Ghana - The Super Eagles of Nigeria may be in deep trouble if they don’t get their act together in their next match against Mali. This is a do-or-die affair after losing 0-1 to Cote d’Ivoire in their opening match of the Nations Cup.
The Eagles had yesterday lost their first match in the ongoing African Cup of Nations taking place in Ghana, to the match favorite Elephants of Cote d’Ivoire, 0-1. The only goal of the match was scored brilliantly in 66th minute by Chelsea striker, Salomon Kalou, through a lone effort. The Ivoirien striker dribbled his way into the Nigerian box, before unleashing a goal past Nigerian Keeper, Austin Ejide.
U-21 World Cup winning Skipper, Taye Taiwo, was very close to opening the scoring 16 minutes into the encounter with a thundering 35-yard shot that hit the crossbar, while Yaya Toure brought out the best in Austin Ejide with his own distant effort. Obafemi Martins got booked for faking a fall in the Ivoirien penalty box under pressure from Gohouri
Nigeria came very close to equalizing in the Ghana 2008 tournament through the effort of Yakubu Aiyegbeni in the second half, but the shot went wide. Ivoirien playmaker and strongman, Didier Drogba was not at his best during the encounter.
Nigeria now trail Cote d’Ivoire and Mali, by three points, after the Malians through Freddie Kanoute’s penalty, defeated Benin 1-0.
The Super Eagles next match against Mali is on January 25 at 19.30 GMTÂ / 1.30 PM (CST).
Other group results:
Namibia 1-5 Morocco
Ghana    2-1 Guinea
