Another PDP Governor’s election annulled
Enugu - The election of Enugu’s Governor, Sullivan Chime of the Peoples Democratic Party, has been annulled by the election petition tribunal sitting in Enugu.
The tribunal chairman, Justice Samuel Ottah, delivered the judgment separately in the election petitions brought by the governorship candidates of the Democratic Peoples Party, Rev. Oscar Egwuonwu; Labour Party, Chief Okey Ezea; and Action Congress, Chief Dubem Onyia challenging the declaration of Chime as the winner of the April 14 and 28, 2007 governorship election in Enugu State by INEC.
In light of this annullment, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) was immediately ordered to conduct a fresh election within three months starting from Friday, January 18. The tribunal noted that the election that brought in Mr. Chime was not conducted in accordance with the Nigerian Electoral Act of 2006, and that majority of the electorate in the state were prevented from voting and exercising their constitutional right.
Mr. Sullivan Chime will be the sixth PDP Governor to have his election quashed since the April 2007, mostly fraudulent election conducted by INEC.
It is now becoming very obvious that the Independent National Electoral Commission was infact not totally independent in its conduct of the April 2007 elections in Nigeria. The electoral body was working actively with the ruling party - The PDP, to fraudulently rig the election sin favor of the latter, despite the laughable insistence of INEC chairman, Professor Maurice Iwu, that the election was the freest and fairest election in the history of Nigeria.
