Awka, Nigeria - The Central Bank of Nigeria will begin prosecuting any one found “bastardizing” the Naira especially those fond of “spraying” the currency at social engagements.
The offence now carries a jail time of up to six months or a fine of N50, 000, according to the Governor of the Apex Bank, Professor Chukwuma Soludo. He made this known at a lecture delivered at the Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Anambra State, where he proclaimed that the nation’s currency was its image, identity and prestige.
According to Professor Soludo, people should give or donate money in a dignified, respectful , and honorable way, by putting it in an envelope or dropping it in the bowl or saucer instead of the normal habit of squeezing, mutilating or roughening the notes. The CBN Governor had a word of advice for Nigerians “Go to the celebrant, show him/her the money before going to drop it without squeezing it, as it is an offence now to do so.”
