Nigerians can now watch CNN on mobile phones
Vanguard (Lagos) - Globalcom Telecommunications has launched the first “Third Generation” - 3G wireless network service in three states of Nigeria - Lagos, Port Harcort, and Abuja, enabling subscribers to have the ability to watch mobile TV channels such as CNN.
Globalcom which had won the licence to operate the 3G service in March of this year, at a cost of $150 million, launched the service at a ceremony at the Eko Hotel and Suites in Lagos. This will be the second time it is in the forefront of pioneering the latest transmission network in Nigeria, having introduced the 2.5G technology at launch in 2003.
Subscribers to the Glo 3G Plus will be able to use cutting edge features such as video calling, high speed internet access on 3G phone or on laptop computers via data cards, video and audio streaming and mobileTV, with the initial channels available being CNN, Fashion TV and Silverbird TV.
The offering according to the company’s COO, Mr. Mohammed Jameel, will “revolutionise the way data is transferred and relayed digitally as it enables a much faster transmission of data, voice, broadband internet and multimedia services over a range of frequencies.”
3G Network communication has been used in developed countries like the USA, Canada, most European countries like UK, Germany, France, Asian countries such as Japan &Â China for some time now, with many already planning for the next phase of 4G network. It is hoped that this new technology will open the door for electronic commerce (e-commerce)Â in Nigeria. Security and online fraud, however, may be the bane of such laudable developments. Advanced Fee Fraud (a.k.a 419) has literally crippled any chance of electronic transactions in the country.
