NY Times - Thousands of undocumented immigrants will breathe a much needed sigh of relief as the US Government has suspended its legal defense of a new rule that would have forced employers to fire workers if their [employee] social security information could not be verified within 90 days.
According to the report from the New York Times, the Bush administration will instead revise the rule and re-submit its legal defense papers to the high courts by March of 2008. This is against the backdrop of concerms raised by a Federal Judge sitting on the case.
The Judge had found that “the government had failed to follow proper procedures in issuing the rule and that it should have completed a survey of its impact on small business as well as the vast amount of errors and inconsistencies in the Social Security Administration’s database, which could have ultimately led to the firing of legal residents and in some cases citizens”.
This must be a welcome news for the thousands of undocumented immigrants, working to have a better life for themselves and their families here in the USA. Hopefully, that will provide some time for these folks to sort themselves out. Â
