Nigerian Senate rejects Bakassi hand over
The Upper legislative body of Nigeria has rejected the “unilateral” handover of the oil-rich Bakassi Penissula to Cameroun by the OBJ government. According to the Senate, the decision was unconstitutional and therefore all actions towards fulfiling Nigeria’s pledge to cede Bakassi to Cameroun should stop immediately.
Although, I am not a Legal Practitioner, I am intelligent to know that such a retraction could be counter-productive for Nigeria. If we are to obey the rule of law, then Nigeria must once and for all forget about the Bakassi, and move on. The problem is that despite all the oil resources that we are blessed with, what significant progress have we achieved in communities that produce this wealth? It seems that those areas of the country are the most improverished and neglected. Maybe, it is indeed a blessing in disguise to have others who appreciates the blessing of God to take ownership of these resources.
